A Hot Chocolate at Lune, Melbourne, Australia

Lune is truly a thing of beauty and I am by far not the only one that thinks so. This blog post will be added to the dozens of posts published a day by various kinds of media in Australia expressing admiration for this relatively new business. But it is all well deserved and they reward our praise with more of what made them deserve praise in the first place: croissants. But no, these aren’t just croissants. I lived in Paris for many years and ate more pain au chocolate that I could ever count. This is Melbourne’s version. They [...]

A Hot Chocolate at Churros, Queen Victoria Night Market, Melbourne, Australia

I don’t have a poker face. Definitely not when it comes to hot chocolates, but cities as well. So it should be very obvious to you all already how much I love Melbourne. I don’t think there is any city in the world like Melbourne, and I have been to many of the great ones. Not only does it have the best hot chocolates), but it is just all round fantastic. Just come here and if you are already here, pat yourself on the back and thank the hot chocolate gods. Ok, so the reason I’ve gone on this little [...]

A Hot Chocolate at Dex2Rose, Melbourne, Australia

Dark and dingy laneways are usually a pretty strong signal to stay away. But take a second look, especially if you are in Melbourne. Some of the best nightclubs, jazz bars, even restaurants I have been to are hidden at the end of so called dingy laneways (places you would like too, nothing scary I assure you!). And I found a new gem at the end of a new dark lane, and this one doesn’t sell alcohol or play loud music but they are open just as late. So turn at the laneway with the graffiti piece that has two [...]

A Hot Chocolate at Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe, Perth, Australia

When you eat, and drink, as much good chocolate as I am lucky enough to eat, and drink, you lose patience very quickly for bad chocolate. I drink many, many more hot chocolates than I review here. The sad truth is that most are really not great (and the café owners then seem surprised that no one ever orders them, and then they make no effort because no one orders them and you have a chicken and egg scenario….). When a Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café opened up on St. Georges Terrace the chocolate snob in me kicked in and I [...]

Sculptures by the Sea and the Hot Chocolate at Il Lido, Perth, Australia

I have never seen anything quite like Sculptures by the Sea anywhere. Sculptures by the Sea is an annual event that goes on for several weeks. For that period, the beach and area around the beach is transformed into a large, open air, and free art gallery. The sculptures are from a variety of artists, both homegrown and foreign, sharing pieces that range from breathtaking and serene to powerful and thought provoking. A large glass marble reflects the world upside down, dolphins swim across the sand, a surfer appears and disappears depending on where you stand. We visited many many times and each time discovered [...]

A Hot Chocolate at Duck Duck Bruce, Freemantle, Australia

Given the name and logo for this little café in Freemantle I assumed I’d enter to find ducks everywhere. But no, no ducks. But there is a Bruce. And there is a nice little hot chocolate. Lets start with Bruce. Lets start with the fact that Bruce is a bit of mystery since the creators of this great spot are actually Sean, Charlie and Woody. I guess Bruce is hiding out back with the ducks but no problem, I’m a fan. Actually I did a bit more searching and Bruce is the name of the model shark used in the [...]

A Hot Chocolate at Bread in Common, Fremantle, Australia

Freemantle may seem to be a part of Perth, but to those that live here it isn’t at all. Freemantle, or Freo as it is called here, is its own little wonderful world and once you visit you understand why the locals not only love it, but see it as its own city. Between the Freemantle Market, the port, the little stores and gorgeous historic buildings, it is a real jewel. If you walk through the centre of Freemantle, turn left down a little road, then right, there it is. This building at 43 Packenham was originally a pharmaceutical warehouse [...]
