A complete breakfast is churros and a hot chocolate. It has to be from Spain though to be considered complete (having a churros and hot chocolate breakfast anywhere else would not be particularly healthy). I shouldn’t have to explain. That’s just the way it is.

This morning we had breakfast at Churreria Santa Lucia. Opened in 1956, this family business is the place to get churros in San Sebastian. Walking in, I don’t get the impression this place ever closes. They cater for the late night crew as readily as the early morning one. The place looks like an old train station with wooden benches everywhere and historic chocolate posters on the walls. An epic movie soundtrack playlist (think Gladiator and Last of the Mohicans) is playing in the background. I can smell Txakoli (a dry, sparkling white wine produced in this region) and pintxos (tapas…but smaller…and better) lingering in the air from last night. How the Spanish survive on these diets. The hot chocolate is thick and pudding like and the churros crispy on the outside and deliciously gooey on the inside, the way both are meant to be when paired together. I realise after few sips in that we made a big mistake. Breakfast, if you observe the locals, is very obviously churros, hot chocolate AND a glass of fresh orange juice. I stand corrected.

By the time we finish, pack up and are ready to leave at 10am, the city is still sleeping. What’s the point of waking up until the pintxos and txakoli are laid out I hear the city whisper back to me. I get it.

Verdict: Highly recommended, every day of the week. Churreria Santa Lucia,  Portu Kalea 6, San Sebastian/Donastia, Spain. This was our third and last hot chocolate in San Sebastian. To read about the others from this trip, click here.
