Tucked behind a gas station off California’s legendary Highway 1, we missed this Bakery the first time we drove past and had to do a U turn (not easy on Big Sur, not easy at all). Housed in a converted ranch house, nestled amongst a sea of cactus, the Big Sur Bakery should be a must stop for anyone tackling the drive along Big Sur. The atmosphere is welcoming, friendly and relaxed. The whole space is about slowing down, savouring the moment. The food here is so good. They are focused on the idea of slow food, beautifully created dishes, uses locally sources ingredients. The wood-fired pizzas were beautiful and I thoroughly enjoyed my hot chocolate.

Wonder around the building after you eat/drink. They have a gorgeous area that today was set up for a wedding and looked like it could be on the cover of any fabulous design magazine. There is a giant wooden chair tucked around the corner, and then of course the cactus, dozens of varieties and every shape and size.

Verdict: Apparently the chocolate chip cookies are famous but come early, they and a lot of other things were sold out by the time we arrived for an early lunch! Big Sur Bakery and Restaurant, 47540 Big Sur, California, USA
