I’m not strong enough for the sweetness of New York City. It is fantastic and loud and colourful and creative and over the top but also very, very sweet. The centre of all this sweetness has got to be Milk Bar. Founded by James Beard award winning pastry chef Christina Tosi, Milk Bar has been creating sweets since 2008. The most stunning of her creations, showcased here at Milk Bar, are the cakes. Layer upon layer of cake and cream, flavoured in every way you could imagine. You can even take a class to make your own birthday cake.
During the year they offer a range of different hot chocolates it seems. When I was there, on a relatively warm day, the only one on offer was a sweet, cocoa powder flavoured, uninspiring drink. But I have seen Instagram posts highlighting their winter creations. One was a hot chocolate made with cereal milk, fudge and topped with charred marshmallows.
Sweet means you don’t taste the chocolate as much, or anything for that matter, so this isn’t for your chocolate lover but for your sugar lover. So as much as I am a fan of Tosi, I’m not sweet enough for Milk Bar.
