It is almost always very cold and very snowy when I visit Montreal. I visit often, and have been since I was young, but when I close my eyes, I see Montreal covered in snow. Obviously, it must be summer sometimes there, but it never seems to be when I’m there. This is honestly fine with me because winter in Canada is peak hot chocolate season, and Montreal is the place to be if you want to find them.
We planned a walk around the city to visit a handful of new chocolate shops, not new per say, new to me. One of my favourite spots was Les Chocolats de Chloé on the Plateau Mont-Royal. While many chocolatiers keep which chocolate they use to make their treats a secret (not usually a good sign), here they proudly use Valrhona which, when it comes to chocolatiers, is one of the best. With this raw material, they create a colourful array of beautiful treats of every size, generously displayed and packaged in bright, eye catching paper. There are chocolate fish and chocolate eggs, advent calendars, brownies, icecreams. Forget Willy Wonka, Chloé is where it is at.
And yes, they make a hot chocolate, three in fact; vanilla, mint or chai served not here in their little chocolate paradise but at @cafereinegarcon located just across the street. We welcome the chance to escape the icy cold streets and linger with our hot chocolates and our bag of goodies from Chloé’s. Highly recommended.
