As part of our exploration of the Roma neighborhood, I had noted that we should stop for a hot chocolate and other treats at Delirio, a beautiful bakery created by famous Mexican chef Monica Patino. When we got there it was jam packed. We waited and waited but finally decided it just wasn’t going to work this time around and that we would try another time. We ended up stopped just a few blocks up the road at Abarrotes Delirio before realizing that the two places are connected!
Unlike the main Delirio café down the street, this one was quiet, more like a corner store that happens to have a few spots to sit inside and outside. Inside the walls were lined with local produce. One wall was covered in tempting loaves of bread and pastries, there were local cheeses and charcuterie, dozens of different flavored freshly made marmalades and a whole shelf filled with different Mexican wines. Just outside a very sophisiticated looking food truck was parked, all painted in matt black selling icecream (Nomada).
My hot chocolate was so nice, something I have come to expect here in Mexico City. It was made from a chocolate blend from Oaxaca made using artisinal methods by hand. Delirio puts a significant focus on using and selling 100% Mexican products. It was rich and creamy with a hint of nutmeg. Highly recommended.
We sat outside watching the Roma neighbourhood do its thing. This Behemian neighourhood is home to lots of little coffee shops, bakeries, as well as cultural centers and art galleries. Several walls are covered with multicoloured graffiti and there are many stunning buildings. After spending time in Roma we made our way back into the Condesa neighbourhood to visit the Medellin market, a traditional local market filled to the brim with colourful pinatas, dried chills of every sort and stacks of fresh fruits and vegetables.
